Conversation and Coffee: 2024 Election Wrap-Up

You’re invited to meet with Civil Beat reporters and staff to learn more about our nonprofit newsroom and talk about this year’s election results. The event will take place on Wednesday, November 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Civil Beat headquarters. The conversation will not be recorded due to the casual nature of the event.

Complimentary coffee and light snacks will be provided.

This event will be held at the Civil Beat headquarters in Kaimuki, located on the second floor above Goodwill Hawaii. Parking is located within the building at 3650 Waialae Avenue, entrance on Wilhelmina Rise. Parking validation will be provided for all attendees.

The Future of Agriculture in Hawai’i in the Era of Climate Change

In our next Future of Food event Civil Beat reporter, Thomas Heaton will have a sit-down with University of Hawaii’s Professor Susan E. Crow and banana grower, Gabe Sachter-Smith to discuss the future of agriculture in Hawai’i in the Era of Climate Change. The panel will explore how climate change impacts Hawaii’s agriculture and how both researchers and producers are attempting to address these challenges. The discussion will cover topics such as “climate-smart” and organic farming practices, cropping system diversity and climate change adaptation, carbon sequestration and its role in soil quality, farming system resilience, and the potential markets for such commodities.
The event will take place on Friday, October 25 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Civil Beat headquarters in Kaimuki.

Hawaii Storytellers: Kupuna 10.17.24

This storytelling event will honor a diverse group of notable kūpuna from the island of Oahu, who will be taking the stage to share their wisdom and memories, so that we can apply the lessons learned to present day. The event will will take place on Thursday, October 17, 2024 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Dillingham Theater at Punahou School. The event will be hosted by Civil Beat Vice President of Operations and Philanthropy, Ben Nishimoto. Register to attend in-person or receive the recording.

Doors open at 5:00 p.m. where you may register, participate in interactive activities and enjoy complimentary snacks. Pre-show entertainment will begin at 5:45 p.m. The official storyteller program will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m.

Cynthia Thielen – Attorney for the Protect Kaho’olawe ‘Ohana during the activist years; represented the Windward District in the House of Representatives 1990-2020; and currently serving on the State Ethics Commission.

Brandy Lee – Iconic showgirl and show producer of The Glade nightclub that reopened in 1963 in Honolulu’s Chinatown after a 5-year ban on drag shows in Hawaii.

Neal Milner – Author, and longtime Hawaii political analyst and columnist at Honolulu Civil Beat.

Amy Agbayani– Civil rights advocate and Filipino community leader.

Kimo Alama Keaulana A Kumu Hula that holds 53 years of experience of teaching all forms of hula. He currently holds the title of kumu ʻIke Hawaiʻi and Kumu Hula at Punahou School.

Civil Beat Community Work Day

You’re invited to a Civil Beat community work day hosted by Kauluakalana on Saturday, July 13, 2024 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Volunteer alongside Civil Beat editors, reporters, and staff as we spend the day restoring and revitalizing the historic Ulupō heiau in Kailua, Oʻahu. All ages are welcome as there will be a variety of ways to volunteer your time. You will have the option to participate in wet tasks such as weeding loʻi kalo or dry tasks like weeding māla or mulching. Lunch will be provided by Kauluakalana for all volunteers.

Address: 1200 Kailua Road, Kailua HI 96734. We will meet behind/below the Windward YMCA at the base of the historic Ulupō heiau. Parking is available at the YMCA parking lot with overflow parking available at the DayBreak Church.

Accessibility: The top of Ulupō Heiau is easily accessible, however, to get to the base of the heiau requires walking down a steep and bumpy path.

Liability Waiver: We require everyone to complete a liability waiver prior to participating.

What to Bring/Wear:

  • Clothes you don’t mind getting dirty
  • Covered shoes/boots/tabis
  • Garden/Work Gloves
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Hat
  • Water bottle (refillable water station available)
  • Mess kit or empty tupperware for lunch

Civil Cafe: Inside Hawaii’s Pay-to-Play Culture

You’re invited to Civil Cafe: Inside Hawaii’s Pay-to-Play Culture on Wednesday, July 10, 2024 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. HST at Civil Beat headquarters. Former New York Times Executive Editor Dean Baquet will join Civil Beat’s Blaze Lovell to talk about Blaze’s yearlong stint as a New York Times Local Investigations Fellow,

the investigative reporting process and what it took to put together the in-depth report on the amount of money flowing from Hawaii’s government contractors to political candidates and elected officials. Civil Beat editor and general manager, Patti Epler, will moderate the discussion.

This free event will be live-streamed and recorded. The recording will be sent to everyone who registers, including those who cannot make it in-person. Transcripts will be available by request following the event. This event will be guided by questions pre-submitted from the audience. Send in your questions through this form or email them to membership@civilbeat.org.
